What makes you so special?

“The world doesn’t give you what you want, the world gives you who you are.”

I fell in love with this quote when I started my coaching journey 3 years ago because, for me, it is inevitably followed by the question... “who am I?”.

Yes, I understand this question typically brings on fear and anxiety to some, but to me it's an opportunity to reconnect and explore.

Now, just to let you know, this isn't an article that's going to go into anything deep and spiritual. Firstly, because this isn't an essay - it’s a blog post, and secondly, I’m not a guru - I am a business coach. With that being said, let’s get into how that question helps create the basis of a successful business.

I have been an entrepreneur since 2010, and the answer to that question has definitely evolved over the years. In the beginning it was never a definitive one. It was always vague and specifically fashioned so I wouldn't sound so full of myself, or to not draw attention to myself.

Sound familiar?

Well guess what was also vague during that time... my business.

Because I wasn’t taking the time to truly define who I am, who I serve and why. My business was just like a boat, sitting in the middle of the ocean, waiting for a wind to take me to where I wanted to go.

Then a major pivotal moment happened to me that I will never forget.

I was attending my first networking event 3 years ago.

Already feeling out of my league, and definitely out of my comfort zone, I downed my first glass of wine while hiding in a bathroom stall. Then I took a deep breath, grabbed a breath mint, a glass of water, walked up to the first person who made eye contact with me and introduced myself. After shaking hands he asked me a question that made me stop like a deer in the headlights, “So, Mel, what makes you so special?”

I have never rambled more in my entire life.

After I finally stopped to take a breath he gracefully interjected and said, “you definitely have a lot of passion, but so does every other coach I meet. If you want to set yourself apart, I suggest you figure out how you’re different and stick with that.”

Talk about a learning experience (and a slight punch in the gut)! I stood there and processed what just happened for a moment and realized I had two choices - turn and leave, or take his advice and start practicing now. I chose the latter.

We all have unlimited potential when it comes to creating profitable leads for our businesses, however, so many of us don’t even get close because we never get clear on, and connected to, who we are, who we serve, how we serve them and why - this is also known as your “message”.

The moral of the story is - if you don’t have a clear message, then you don’t have a consistent business.

So, what makes you so special?
